I am planning a Feb. 2013 trip to Maui. Should I stay at Wailea Beach Marriott or Makena Beach/Golf Resort?

Posted on January 12th, 2012 by admin

Due to my travel budget and reward point credits, these are the only two properties I am considering. Has anyone been to either of these resorts specifically in February, which I understand is the winter/rainy season? How was the weather on this part of the island? How are the winds? How are the beaches at each property? How are the pools (heated or not, warm or cold)? We will have 2 adults and 2 teenagers in one room–how are the rooms?

Thanks for any advice as I make this big decision!

Hey, welcome to Hawaii, ok? You know, Marie the professional hea, and she nail it down good, I agree with her, not go to Makena less you wanna play lotta golf, ok? Peace and aloha to you!

    Aloha from Maui,
As a travel agent who specializes in Hawaiian vacations and a resident of Maui I have stayed at both of these hotels within the last year.

They are both very nice, but very different. The Wailea Marriott is located in Wailea nearby the shops of Wailea. Meaning you will have places to eat, shop and get a drink nearby. This is in addition to great places to eat at the hotel.

The Makena Beach and golf resort is in Makena. This propery is more secluded. Makena is nearby Big Beach (5 minute drive), about 10 minutes or so from Wailea and 60+ minutes from Kaanapali. The only places to eat within walking distance (besides the hotel) is the golf course across the street.

With 2 teenagers you are going to be tight regardless of which hotel you stay at. But they will have more to do in the Wailea area.

Feb. can be wet but not always. Maui and the Big island of Hawaii tend to be the less wet than Oahu, or Kauai. Especially if you will be staying on the South side of Maui.

It is beautiful here today on Maui. 75 degrees, light trade winds and sunny!
