Call and speak with your city's planning department or historical society. Sometimes, historic buildings simply cannot be saved; they may structurally beyond repair but look okay from the outside. You can also contact the Illinois State Historical Society if you local one is not helpful. Another resource for you may be AASLH, the professional organization for state and local history.

I wish there was an answer to this question. I've lived in Chicago almost my entire life. There is no end to the devestation of old beautiful buildings in the city (well that is wrong because the end is when they are all gone). One way is through legal preservation. This is tough for me because a person should have the right to do with their own property what they choose as long as it does not harm anyone else. It would be hard to argue that an ugly new condo actually does true harm to anyone. What the real answer would be is change the way people look at the city. Instill the notion that character can lead to progress.

If you will be able to get some attention, than you can actually achieve something. You can do that by posting some kind of article in local newspaper and attending meetings.

try to get as much attention you have got, because when you will reach people, some of them will start thinking and will follow you.

Get a petition going. Write it up and get as many signatures and addresses of voters as you can. Attend a town meeting and protest. If that doesn't work submit the petition to the mayor. You should also call your local newspaper and ask them to do a story on it. This will embarrass the idiots who want to destroy historic landmarks.

If you were or are rich , then you could buy them. Sometimes the gov even kicks in money if you van prove that somebody famous lived there. Also, make sure your spelling is in tip top form on anything official. If you are descended from somebody like John Adams, it would help too I think.

you have to start with the county commissioners or city whichever is relevant. they vote on doing these things. if you want to raise public awareness, write editorials in your local paper to gain interest with the local community. hold your own meetings about saving the buildings if the historical society is lame. you can do it! one person can make a difference.
