Why is Obama demanding sensitive gun info?

Obama is giving this questionaire to those members of his transition team, specifically, #59
"(59) Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage."
First, is he asking this same quesiton about cars? Alcohol usage?
Second, giving registration information such as the serial number of your gun is a very dumb idea. You might as well give a hacker your credit card number. There is a reason you just can’t walk into the police office and ask to ‘browse’ through the gun registration files.
Further, what is ‘complete ownership information’? You bought it, you own it. What else is there? Are you expected to be able to produce a receipt? No reason to keep a recipt any more than you keep one for your golf clubs. What about if you were gifted the gun or inhereted it?
I have a pump action .22LR rifle that my Grandfather bought as a young boy during the Great Depression at an auction of a farmer who was loosing his farm. This rifle played a very important part in keeping himself and his siblings fed during the Great Depression. How do you provide ‘complete ownership information’ on that gun?

Bob has some good points, but think about that for a minute.
If someone does have a ‘fishy’ past, are they going to admit it? NO! they are going to lie about it! Do you think anyone is going to report that gun they stole? Do you think anyone is going to report they have been cheating on their taxes?
Further, how is the Obama team going to process the info anyways. Lets say you are dumb enough to give them the serial number on your firearm, what then? Gun sales are presonal info, tightly controlled, Obama staff can’t just walk in and start researching. What are they going to do, have the ATF run the checks for them?
Is that smart of the Obama team? Waste the ATF’s time chasing down info on legally owned firearms on the tiny tiny tiny off chance there is something ‘fishy’ about it?
Holyoke makes a good point too. A lot of the questions are designed to show where trouble can lay. However, all the rest simply ask for you to give info (like your speeches, your other streams of income, your real estate holdings, etc) that is all public info that can be turned up with a little bit of digging.
In no other catagory is there a demand of specific private info. For instance, there is no demand that ‘a photocopy of the jucy tidbits of the diary be included’ or demand proof that you legally own the property you have. They ask about a phyiscal, but never demand proof you had it and a copy of the findings.
It would be fine if they asked general quesitons about firearms, (do you own firearms? do you hunt? targetshoot? other? Have you ever been convicted of a firearm crime? been a victim of a firearm crime? been in a firearms related accident?
That would be fine, however, demanding proof of ownership, private legally sensitive info, id numbers, no, too far!
Some claim Obama fears wackjobs and gunnuts attempting to kill him.
If you are planning on doing that, you going to admit firearm ownership on the form? Hey, let the secret service know, maybe they can run a TV add "Planning on killing Obama? Please call 1-877-SECSERV

False. You cannot, protected info. No more than you can run a background check and find if a woman had an abortion, or see medical records. Besides, very few guns are legally required to be registered.
He wants the gun info because during his debates against Clinton he clearly stated he was for banning handgun sales and limiting all gun sales. Consequently he can’t have any gun owners working for him directly.

If you look at all the questions you can tell that the questions are aimed principally at whether or not there is going to be any scandals coming out of any candidate. If someone has fishy guns it doesn’t look good. If someone lied on their past resumes it doesn’t look good. If someone is behind on their taxes, etc.

um, there are all sorts of crazy questions in there.
Have you ever worked for a foreign government?
Have you ever lived abroad?
Have you kept a diary that could embarrass you?
Do you have hired help at home?
There’s no reason to vew this thing through the lens of gun control.
Thorough background checks are standard and easily justified for these sorts of jobs

Unfortunately Obama is getting more threats than any president-elect ever has. His team knows that some whack-job might try and get close to him by trying to get a job in the team. So they are scrutinizing anyone who might be having contact in any way.
And giving your gun information to the representative of the president is not the same as giving a hacker your card number or someone just walking to the local courthouse and getting registration numbers. If they wanted they could get the registration number for any registered firearm in the country whether or not the owner was applying for a job with them or not. And I bet they run that check with everyone applying and see if it matches the information the applicant gave.
Too bad it has to be that way but with all the threats they really can’t take any chances.
You and I might not be able to get that info the president who has the secret service and the CIA and the BATF working for him can and have been doing so for quite some time.

You might not like my answer but: there is now and has always existed in this country a major undercurrent of racism. There will be people in Washington who will seek to damage Obama strictly based on his race. I know its a shocker since this is America- but he has even more to watch out for than the previous 43 presidents.
Keep in mind the people we are talking about are mostly over 50, not like these little Yahoo kiddies.
