Any ideas for a government grant to help purchase an established business?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by admin

A person in my family has a golf course that they are about to lose due to poor planning and insufficient management. I want to buy it from the bank but it will cost me about $700,000. I do not have that kind of money. I’m just a teacher. If this property could be bought free and clear it would really have great potential. I need a grant that will get me there.

Matthew Lesko’s book lists EVERY grant the government and private foundation gives — but gives the false information that these grants are available to those who want to start a business or for whatever purpose. If you follow Lesko’s list, you will end up writing to all these foundations asking for a grant and get rejection letters — because they do not give grants for this purpose.

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html…

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.
http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don’t have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

I want to open a small business how do I research government grants?

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by admin

Golf driving range, I have perfect property in mind with some unique business ideas!

You stand a greater chance of getting a government-guaranteed loan through the Small Business Administration http://www.sba.gov/financing than a government grant. Read the SBA Financing page to learn about criteria needed for borrowing

It is hard to find grants to start a business — especially for a golf driving range business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business.

I’d have him sign it. I golf a lot and have hit people before and it isn’t funny when it happens.

where could i move to in the world with my family where we can still give my daughter a good education?

Posted on December 16th, 2009 by admin

live in the sun, go scuba diving, play golf and property prices are lower than the UK.

There is only one place I would recommend…Australia.

The house prices are very cheap and the weather is perfect for the best part of 11 months of the yr. Their winters begin when our summer starts and the coldest it gets is about 22-23 degrees which is still quite warm.
The Gold coast is amazing and very beautiful, plus water sports and surfing are part of most school curriculum’s. The standard of Educ is excellent, if you want to check outside of Sydney or along the gold coast, New south Wales etc you will find the house prices dirt cheap. The houses are amazing for what you can get for 200K.

My sister moved her family over 3 yrs ago and said it was the best thing she ever did. After seeing what she bought for 220K compared to her small house in Epsom, I was lost for words, and the beach is 15 Min’s from her house and she has amazing sea views…plus you won’t have to learn a language either!
You should check out the Aussie Prop market on line to get a good Idea of what you can get..you will be surprised!
