Can my landlord make me pay for damage if I don’t have a lease?

I left my rented property last week and told the landlord on the day I moved. I know it wasn’t fair not giving any notice but I only knew I was moving 3 days before and my landlord has never done much for me he left me a week and a half without any water while I have a baby in the house along with other things . I don’t owe him any rent as I was always up to date with my payments but he is trying to invoice me for minor damage. However, I payed him a deposit which i feel is more than enough to fix a small hole in the wall. I moved into the flat in 0ct 2009 and my lease was up in April 2010. Can my landlord make me pay if i havn’t had a lease in over a year? Also I payed him cash in hand for the first 5 months and then started making payment into his private golf account. Is that legal for a tenant to pay rent into a private account or does it have to be a business account?
I left half way through the month that I’d already paid rent in advance for. Yeah I know it wasn’t right not giving notice but when your stuck in a crappy flat that the landlord has promised he’ll fix and never has and you get an opportunity to leave then I’m sure yous would jump at the chance as well.
Being on a lease does not relieve you of the responsibility of not paying for any potential damage you left while residing in the rental.
If the damage exceed your deposit then you would be required to pay the additional amount.
Being without water for several months should have been addressed at that time. You are now throwing up smoke screens attempting to rationalize your not wanting to pay for the damage your caused.
Then you only gave a 3 day notice you were moving, this was not a good move on your part. This also is another reason for withholding your deposit as the landlord has no rent from you for the month you moved.
I am not sure of the notice required in your country, however, I am sure it is more than 3 days prior to you moving.
I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.
